Why see a psychiatrist? Psychiatrists and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), also known as psych NPs, both assess diagnose, and treat patients with behavioral and mental health conditions. However, psychiatrists are medical doctors who have completed medical school and residency and have extensive and years of training in medicine and the field of psychiatry. On the other hand, psych NPs are advanced practice registered nurses who have completed masters level and sometimes doctoral degrees as part of their training and have less depth in their training. One of the main differences between the two is the amount of time spent in school. PMHNPs spend 6-7 years completing their bachelor's and master's degrees, while psychiatrists take about 12 years to earn their licenses by completing 4 years of a bachelor's degree, 4 years of a medical degree, and 4 years of psychiatry residency. Dr. Davis is a physician who has completed 12 years of training and on top of that, has spent 10 years in the eating disorder field and is a seasoned, expert psychiatrist.
